Age is being redefined every time we turn around. Fifty is the new 30, as they say. People are living longer and maintaining active social lives and careers well after their child bearing years. The Amira team asked Nonfiction to help them design a wearable that aligned with the user, the vision of the brand and their patented cooling technology.
Establishing the Amira brand vibe began with a thorough investigation of a vibrant and aging population. We interviewed participants experiencing various affects and hormonal changes related to menopause. The results formed a complex and beautiful image of the modern woman who celebrates the freedom that maturity brings.
The Amira wearable is inspired by the natural world and the forces that drive it, including flowing tides, the moon, mother Earth and celestial bodies. We used this powerful imagery to drive our design process.
Amira is worn when you are at your most vulnerable – asleep in bed. It becomes part of your intimate, nightly ritual. For these reasons, we took away any clue that it is a smart device.
The form and function is devoid of straight lines, perfect radii, blinking lights, obvious buttons and screens. It is an object that lives around the wrist, with details that are reminiscent of elements of nature, living in a place between the poetic and the physical structure of the universe.
Hot flashes can occur for up to 10 years. Environmental conditions may include, body oil, cosmetic lotions, temperature changes, hand washing and more. So we designed Amira with durability and resilience in mind. The rubber nibs fused to the wristband allow the user to easily change the wristband for cleaning or customization.
The magnetic charging base quickly and reliably aligns the electrical contacts without the need for messy cables and overthinking. This lets blurry-eyed users go about their morning routine in any fashion they choose.
Combined with their patented smart technology, cooling base and mattress pad, Amira can preemptively counteract sweating and awakening. A proprietary algorithm learns users’ sleep patterns and hot flash profiles to deliver valuable sleep metrics and recommendations, helping women sleep more soundly.
During the brand development we explored many different type treatments. While each has a personality of its own, they all attempt to capture the strong, elegant and independent sprit of the Amira woman.
The brand solution combines a powerful logo mark and an iconic wordmark that communicates strength and subtle elegance in its curves. The round period in the letter "A" uses negative space to illustrate the multidimensionality of the person. The terracotta colorway is modern and sophisticated. It stands out against the myriad of expected colors that tend to pander to what brands think women need.
